MEET OUR STAFF

Selected for their knowledge of child development as well as their strong interpersonal skills, our staff is a central part of the strength of our program. Ongoing professional development training in the areas of communication, evidence based research models of education, curriculum,  continual assessment of every child and self reflection strategies are facilitated by our Director at our collaborative Staff Meetings.

Marsha Mitnick, Director

Marsha has been working with young children and their families for over 25 years. She started in the early childhood classroom and then moved onto creating and directing a therapeutic preschool.  Eight years ago she was asked to bring all her expertise to start The Learning Center.  Having worked previously  in a specialty setting, The Learning Center families and children benefit from Marsha's training  in recognizing and providing support should struggles arise for any child and family.  Some of her favorite things about being a part of the team at The Learning Center are teaching children through hands on learning in the garden and working with parents on parenting. In addition to running The Learning Center, Marsha is a licensed child therapist.

Janet Kelly has been in early childhood for many years and teaching at TLC for 4 years.  She currently teaches in the 3 year old classroom.  She loves working at TLC because of the philosophy of the school.  The classes have low ratios and the teachers work as a team, and are part of a mentoring, sharing environment.
Janet Kelly, Lead Teacher
Kate is an Assistant Teacher at The Learning Center. This is her  third year of teaching, and second year at The Learning Center. She has Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, with a strong focus in child development. This serves her well as she interacts with The Learning Center kids. Kate is a helpful and positive individual who always brings happiness, kindness and diligence to the classroom.   Kate loves working at The Learning Center because of the wonderful and productive learning environment for the children.
Kate Derkacz, Lead Teacher
Dawn DeVoe, Lead Teacher
Dawn DeVoe began teaching at The Learning Center Preschool this summer and will continue as lead teacher for the 2 1/2 year old class this fall. She has moved back to her home state in Michigan from Ohio and looks forward to nurturing the growth of her students. She has a B.S. in Child Development, taught for many years at a preschool in DeWitt, Michigan and recently completed her MEd with a license as an intervention specialist. Learning through play has been a teaching philosophy that has been applied to her previous teaching experiences and one she feels is very beneficial to the child. This is something she connected with through her experiences with TLC as well as the team work of the staff. She feels a child deserves the opportunity to have someone believe in them and be listened to with the heart as well as the head.
Gaye Taub, Assistant Teacher

We are truly blessed that we have Rabbis who love being a part of everything we do! We see this through the kids whenever the Rabbis are around...the comfort, the ease of the growing relationship between them.

Gaye Taub moved to michigan 25 years ago from New York with her husband and 3 young daughters. She  was the lead teacher in the 2 and 3 year olds. For the last 20 years she taught at the early childhood center at adat shalom. Gaye  decided to retire when her 3 youngest grandchildren(yes 2 of her daughters were due the same day. Her twin girls came early) born.  She was a hands on Bubbie. Last year all 4 of her grandchildren were in school full time and gaye decided she needed to return to teaching and decided to come back as an assistant teacher at TLC.
Rabbi Michael Moskowitz

Rabbi Mike may be the Senior Rabbi at Temple Shir Shalom but at The Learning Center he feels like a rock star!  By building playful relationships at every Learning Center event and celebrating Shabbat with all of the kids, Rabbi Mike is always welcomed with a big cheer of: “Here comes Rabbi Mike!”

Rabbi Daniel Schwartz
Nothing stops Rabbi Dan from playing with the kids from The Learning Center.  One day after celebrating Shabbat one of the student’s asked if he would come on the playground.  “Sure” he said.  “Let me just get my snow pants out of the car!”
